The island fell below 3.2 million
And this time it was not the people who left
The gap between the first two bars is almost the entire loss.
Puerto Rico closed July 2025 with 3,184,835 residents. It is the first time the island has come in under 3.2 million since the 1980 census.
The part that changes the conversation is where the loss comes from. For years the answer was the airport. This year, for the third running, it is not: there were 32,857 deaths against 17,950 births. Almost two deaths for every birth. Net migration accounted for 2,779 people, a sixth of the decline.
That matters because the two are fixed in different ways. A net outflow responds to what happens with jobs, housing or the hurricane that year. A population burying twice as many as it baptises responds to its own age, and that does not reverse with one good season.
For anyone selling something, the number to watch is not the total but what it is made of. A market losing 17,686 people a year, and losing them from the top of the pyramid, does not buy the same thing next year with 0.6% fewer people. It buys different things.
